The German-South African Lawyers Association (GSLA) (Deutsch-Südafrikanische Juristenvereinigung) has made a substantial donation to the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic.
Another appearance on Carte Blanche
The Clinic featured on Carte Blanche on 2 August. Stephan van der Merwe was consulted to highlight some of the benefits and possible pitfalls of the South African debt counselling mechanism.
New Submissions Made and Accepted
The Law Clinic made extensive submissions in relation to proposed amendments to Magistrates’ Courts Rule 5 which deals with the summons.
Teaching Excellence
The Clinic’s Stephan van der Merwe shared some of his teaching experiences as a recent recipient of the Stellenbosch University Teaching Excellence Award with attendees of the Predac program from the Law Faculty.
Update: US Law Clinic & others / National Credit Regulator & others
On 13 December 2019 the Western Cape High Court issued its landmark judgment in favor of the applicants, the effect being that all amounts (including legal fees) that accrue against the debtor during the time that they are in default, are limited to the arrears debt at the time of default. Leave to appeal the judgment has been requested by one of the respondents, Bayport. The Clinic has allocated many of its resources to the institution of the pending class action to give effect to the terms of the judgment. We are currently consulting with our legal team to consider our options in the light of the appeal.
Update: US Law Clinic / Lifestyle Legal
The hearing regarding parts A (interim relief) and B (class action certification) of the relief sought by the SU Law Clinic in its litigation against Lifestyle Direct Group International (Pty) Ltd and others has been postponed to 21-22 April 2020.
Groundbreaking victory for the poor
In a massive victory against the continued unscrupulous exploitation of debtors, the Western Cape High Court has found in favour of the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic, Summit Financial Partners and 10 of their clients on all counts in the long awaited ‘in duplum’ judgment.

STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY LAW CLINIC LAUNCHES SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC INTEREST CLASS ACTION
An application was filed with the Western Cape High Court on 13 September 2019 in which the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic and 8 of their clients are instituting a class action lawsuit on behalf of thousands of defrauded consumers.
