Hasselt Internship

The Clinic’s hosted a number of Hasselt interns for a 5-week internship programme. The interns were exposed to  orientation and training in clinical processes, South African law, and sensitivity to our social justice environment.

Collaborations with the Black Sash

The Black Sash along with Stellenbosch University Law Clinic facilitated a stream on debt, credit and consumer rights at the 6th annual Dullah Omar School for Paralegalism.

Supreme Court of Appeal Confirms Security of Tenure of Elderly Female and Her Mentally Disabled Son

On 14 July 2021, the Supreme Court of Appeal, following a twelve-year legal battle, delivered judgment in favour of the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic’s 84-year-old client, Ms Clara Phillips, and her mentally disabled son.

Western Cape High Court Certifies SU Law Clinic Class Action

On 21 July 2021, the Western Cape High Court certified the SU Law Clinic’s class action application in which the Clinic and 8 of their clients seek permission to institute a class action on behalf of thousands of defrauded consumers.

The Clinic’s 2020 Media Coverage – In A Nutshell!

During 2020, the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic enjoyed widespread media coverage. Based on the combined reach of the aforementioned coverage, the total AVE of the Law Clinic’s media exposure was over R4 million*.

Clinic Spearheading Eviction Work

Nettie Welcome, an ESTA occupier and former client of the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic, which forms part of the Faculty of Law, approached the Clinic for legal assistance in an eviction-related matter. The Clinic was her last resort: “We sat in the dark and without water for three months. If the Clinic did not help us, we would have been put out on the street. We are extremely grateful for your service. Very grateful!” Similarly, Nicolas Simen Grobbelaar, a PIE occupier and former client of the Clinic, was also desperate for legal assistance in his PIE-related matter: “Once again, I thank you for all your assistance and compassion regarding this matter…It’s seldom to find someone with your empathy combined with a sense of justice… What would I do without you? Thank you for taking the weight off my shoulders.”

ESTA Training

On Thursday, 3 December 2020, attorney Nikita Roode presented an ESTA training session to members of the Witzenberg Water for Justice Coalition in Bella Vista.
