Stellenbosch University Law Clinic’s mission

One of the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic’s missions is to provide professional clinical legal education to law students, candidate attorneys, and the broader public. In keeping with this, the Law Clinic hosted an event on 28 March 2018, where Senior Advocate and well known author Chris Marnewick presented a discussion on trial advocacy. Senior Advocate Marnewick’s discussion focused primarily on cross-examination and the theories and techniques one may apply in becoming a better cross-examiner. The staff members and students who attended the event were encouraged to participate in the discussion and cross-examination techniques used in popular and relevant cases such as the OJ Simpson trial, as well as the ongoing Van Breda trial, were critically discussed to determine ways in which these techniques could be improved or substituted. Students attending the event described it as a “fruitful” and “interesting” discussion and the Law Clinic aims to host more events of this nature in the foreseeable future.
